description

Salix repens is a deciduous, richly branched dwarf shrub with ascending to upright branches, which reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The alternate leaves are lanceolate, gray-green to green on top, densely hairy on the underside, are 1.5 to 5 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide.

The creeping willow is dioecious, separate sexes ( diocesan ). The kitten-shaped inflorescences appear long before the leaves.

The chromosome number for all subspecies is 2n = 38.

Distribution and location

The natural range of Salix repens extends from Europe to western and central Asia .

The creep pasture thrives in moist to alternately waterlogged, calcareous, base-rich, humos peaty sandy and clay soils (eg. As in marshlands, heath and fens , wet rough pastures and Heiden ).

Subspecies

The creeping willow is divided into three or four subspecies:

  • The rosemary willow ( Salix repens subsp. Rosmarinifolia (L.) Celak. ) With 2 to 4 cm long, but only very narrow leaves reminiscent of rosemary (name!) Can be found predominantly inland and along the Baltic Sea coast, while the Actual creeping willow in the narrower sense is mainly found in Atlantic influenced Europe, in the southwest of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The rosemary willow is also viewed by some authors as an independent species and is then called Salix rosmarinifolia L. It is a character species of the Betulo-Salicetum repentis from the Salicion cinereae association.
  • The sand-creeping willow ( Salix repens subsp. Arenaria (L.) Hiitonen , Syn .: Salix repens subsp. Argentea (Sm.) EC Camus & A. Camus ) oval to broad oval and dense silvery whose leaves are hairy, grows in the dune areas of the North and Baltic Seas, and on the Atlantic from western France to southern Scandinavia . It thrives in societies of the Salicion arenariae association, but also occurs in pagans of the Empetrion nigri association.
  • The dune creeping willow ( Salix repens subsp. Dunensis Rouy ) has gray-whitish hairy leaves that are dense and not bald on the upper side, and silvery silky-haired on the underside. It occurs on dunes on the coast and is only found in the littoral areas of Europe.
  • True creeping willow ( Salix repens subsp. Repens ). It is a species of the Betulo-Salicetum repentis from the association Salicion cinereae. In the Allgäu Alps, it rises up to 1,100 meters above sea level.
