The Ulmer Zelt is a cultural festival that has been held annually in Ulmer Friedrichsau since 1987 from late May to early July . The construction begins at the end of April, the dismantling will continue until 2 weeks after the season.

The first festival was held in 1985 as the “Ulm Alternative Culture Week” at changing locations. In 1987 the first tent opened at the Volksfestplatz in Friedrichsau. Over the years the offer has been expanded - gradually, free performances by regional musicians, a children's action area, a children's program, a beer garden with several restaurants and flea markets were added.

Sponsorship and funding

The Ulm tent is sponsored by the Association for the Promotion of Free Culture Ulm e. V., which consists mainly of voluntary members and currently has 3 employees. In addition, fee workers are employed during one season. Jan Ilg is the artistic director of the Ulm tent.

In addition to the income from entrance fees and catering, the Ulmer Zelt receives grants from the city of Ulm (52,000 euros in 2018) and the state of Baden-Württemberg (26,000 euros in 2018). A significant part of the financing is provided by sponsors and the “Friends of the Ulmer Zelts eV” association. V. “at. The association was founded in 1992 by the Ulm politician Martin Rivoir and has been headed by him ever since.

The large tent holds over 1000 spectators (standing). The evening events are attended by around 20,000 people each year. In total, the festival is used by around 70,000 visitors each year (2019: 86,000).
