features

butterfly

There is a strong sexual dimorphism between the two sexes . The male moths reach a wingspan of 21 to 35 millimeters. The front wings are gray-brown to red-brown in color and show a very high-contrast drawing. The fringing area and the outer boundary of the central area are, like the veins, milky white to yellow-brown in color. Cones , ring and kidney blemishes stand out clearly in ocher color. The hind wings are almost without drawing and mostly colored pale yellow-gray. The flightless females have only very short brown wing stubs on which the blemishes can sometimes be seen as light shadows. They have a plump body shape and are short gray-brown haired. The feelers are thread-shaped.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution of Ulochlaena hirta ranges from some local places in Southeastern Europe and the Mediterranean region to the east via Turkey , Iran and the Kopet-Dag Mountains to the southern Urals . The animals are mainly found in open, warm and dry areas as well as bush landscapes.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths live in one generation from mid-October to late December. Even on frosty nights they visit a number of artificial light sources . The caterpillars live hidden in the ground during the day, feed on the roots of various grasses and are fully grown in April. They pupate in the earth. The species overwinters as an egg.
