The Xyleninae are a species and generic subfamily of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae). The species are predominantly nocturnal ( moths ) and distributed worldwide.

The species cannot currently be represented as a monophyletic taxon by means of a derived characteristic that is exclusively common to them . However, a particular combination of characteristics in the genitals of males and females suggests monophyly.

Occurrence and distribution

The subfamily is common worldwide. The species occur from the tropics to the temperate latitudes . The majority of the species have caterpillars that live on the leaves of the trees. Few species also live on herbaceous plants or drill into the roots of herbaceous plants .

Systematics

The monophyly of the subfamily Xyleninae has not yet been clarified beyond doubt. It could also be paraphyletic . It is divided into eight tribes ; the scope of the tribe is z. In some cases not yet fully clarified:
