Genre : Agrochola
Type : Changeable autumn owl
Scientific name
Agrochola lychnidis
( Denis & Schiffermüller , 1775)

The changeable autumn owl ( Agrochola lychnidis ) is a butterfly from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae), which is widespread in almost all of Europe .

features

The moth is very variable in color, yellow, red, olive-gray, brown and almost black specimens occur. Very often with lightly veined or edged blemishes. The hind wings are dark gray-brown. This means that it can be easily distinguished from Agrochola lunosa . Contrary to their name, the flaws are not ring-shaped at all, but very narrow and elongated. The kidney defects are also relatively narrow. The wingspan is 30 to 40 millimeters.

In Bulgaria, Greece and Cyprus, reddish specimens can easily be confused with the Agrochola rupicapra found there.

Way of life

The preferred habitats of the moths are deciduous forests and forest clearings. The caterpillars can be found on Prunus , willows ( Salix ), yarrow ( Achillea ) and buttercups ( Ranunculus ) from April to July . After the pupa has passed the summer diapause, the moths fly in September and October, sometimes even into November. The species overwinters as a caterpillar.
