The Haarstrangwurzeleule ( Gortyna borelii ) is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of cutworms (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth varies between 42 and 58 millimeters. The relatively large moths have brownish-colored forewings with three distinctive white blemishes in the discal region . The hind wings are colored whitish.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are yellow to light brown in color and have black spots. The head is orange-red.

distribution and habitat

The hairline root owl is widespread in Europe, but only locally occurring and rare. The butterfly species can be found on wet meadows with occurrences of hair strands . In England it occurs only on the Kent and Essex coasts . In Germany, the butterfly species is also only found locally, for example in the Rhine meadows south of Mannheim and in the Hockenheimer Rheinbogen .

Way of life

The univoltine butterflies are crepuscular and nocturnal. The flight time lasts from late August to early October. The caterpillars feed exclusively on the real hair strand ( Peucedanum officinale ), a high-growing umbelliferous plant. The eggs are laid on the forage plants in autumn. The species overwinters as an egg. The caterpillars hatch in late spring. At first they mince on the stems. Later, the caterpillars bury themselves and drill into the roots of the hairline plants.

Hazards and protective measures

The butterfly species is strictly protected throughout Europe. The species is dependent on its forage plants. As a protective measure, meadows on which the moth occurs are excluded from mowing. Furthermore, flooding of the meadows (on the English coast from sea floods, in southwest Germany from river floods) threatens the caterpillars and thus the entire butterfly population. As a protective measure, hairline plants are planted in flood-safe locations and individual caterpillar populations are relocated.
