The three-line owl ( Charanyca trigrammica ), also known as the yellow forest grass owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

With a wingspan of 29 to 38 millimeters, the moths are among the medium-sized owl butterflies. The forewings have a basic color that varies from yellow to beige and gray to reddish brown. Characteristic are three dark transverse lines that run almost straight. At times the middle line is very indistinct. All lines may be missing from individual copies. Flaws are usually not noticeable. The hind wings are gray-brown or the same color as the forewings. The antennae of the male moths are toothed, those of the females are thread-like.

egg

The spherical egg is strongly flattened at the base and has strong ribs, but only about half of them reach the pole. It is yellowish white in color.

Caterpillar

The caterpillar is stocky, gray to reddish in color, has many pointy warts and a few short hairs and shows a light, interrupted topline. The stigmas are outlined in black and white. The front part tapers towards the small head.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The three-line owl occurs in almost all of Europe. There are also deposits in Asia Minor and the Caucasus . In the mountains it can still be found at heights of 1000 meters. It prefers forest edges rich in shrubbery, clearings, cultivated landscapes and semi-arid lawns, but can also be found on wet meadows.

Way of life

The moths fly univoltin from May to July. They are crepuscular and nocturnal. Occasionally they suckle on flowers, for example those of butterfly lilacs ( Buddleja davidii ), meadow sage ( Salvia pratensis ) or widow flowers ( Knautia ). They also visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars live on or in the ground and are usually covered with small clods of earth that easily adhere to their warty structure. They feed preferred by plantain ( Plantago lanceolata ), plantain ( Plantago major ), Middle plantain ( Plantago media ), sorrel ( Rumex ), dandelion ( Taraxacum ), Taubnesseln ( Lamium ) and other low plants. They live from July, overwinter and pupate in April of the following year.

Danger

The three-line owl occurs in Germany in all federal states and is classified as not endangered on the red list of endangered species .
