The curry straw mulch ( Oligia strigilis ) or straw mulch is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of the owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

With a wingspan of 23 to 29 millimeters, the species is one of the smaller owl butterfly species. The forewings can show gray-brown to almost black colorations, but are never reddish or yellowish in color. The flaws hardly stand out from the underground. The strongly curved outer transverse line is striking. The fringing area is often whitish in color. A few black teeth that extend from the middle field into the lighter fringe area are characteristic. The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing.

Caterpillar, pupa

Adult caterpillars are yellowish or gray-white in color. The back area has a reddish shimmer and shows a white center line. The shiny, red-brown doll is characterized by two curved thorns on the cremaster .

Similar species

  • The bog meadow mulch ( Oligia fasciuncula ) differs in the mostly reddish or brownish color of the forewings.
  • The whitish drawing elements in the border area are missing in the dark straw mulch ( Oligia latruncula ).
  • In the forest grass moth owl ( Protodeltote pygarga ), the white border does not extend to the apex . Kidney and ring flaws stand out clearly from the darker basic color.

In order to rule out any doubts during the determination, a genital morphological examination should also be performed.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The common straw mulch is common in almost all of Europe. Other occurrence areas are the Middle East and Central Asia as well as the Altai Mountains . In the Alps, the species can still be found at altitudes of over 1500 meters. It lives in a wide variety of habitats. These include, for example, forests, meadows, moors, rocky regions, park landscapes and settlement areas.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly in one generation from May to August and like to visit artificial light sources and bait . Sometimes they also suckle the flowers of the butterfly lilac ( Buddleja davidii ). The caterpillars can be observed from September and after wintering in the following year until May. They feed on ball grasses ( Dactylis ), Schmielen ( Deschampsia ) and other sweet grasses (Poaceae).

Danger

In Germany, the harlequin mulch is widespread and common in some areas. It is therefore listed as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species .
