The bog meadow owl ( Oligia fasciuncula ), also known as bog meadow owl or yellowish grass owl, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of owl butterflies (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

With a wingspan of 22 to 26 millimeters, the species is one of the smaller owl butterfly species. The forewings are mostly reddish in color. However, there are also specimens with yellowish or brownish tints. The blemishes stand out from the surface only slightly brightened. The middle field is always darkened, the wavy line indistinct. Butterflies from isolated areas of the northern Black Forest can be recognized by their particularly high-contrast, dark reddish-brown coloration and the black cross lines on the inside. These animals were at times called Oligia fasciuncula marmorata . However, the status of a subspecies is not justified from today's perspective. The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing.

Caterpillar, pupa

Adult caterpillars are whitish to reddish in color. The back area shimmers darker and shows a yellowish back line. They also have light side stripes that are bordered dark. The shiny, brown doll is characterized by two long, curved thorns and a few bristles on the cremaster .

Similar species

  • The curry straw mulch ( Oligia strigilis ) differs by darker colors of the front wings with a mostly whitish border.
  • In the case of the multicolored straw mulch ( Oligia versicolor ), a white border area is usually also recognizable on the dark front wings.
  • The lighter reddish color elements are missing in the dark straw mulch ( Oligia latruncula ).

In order to rule out any doubts during the determination, a genital morphological examination should also be performed.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The moorland straw mule is widespread from Spain to Russia through Europe. The species has continuously expanded east and north since the 19th and 20th centuries. It prefers to inhabit humid habitats. These include, for example, meadows, floodplains, moors and swamp forest areas.

Way of life

The crepuscular and nocturnal moths fly in one generation in June and July and visit artificial light sources and bait . The caterpillars can be found from August and after wintering in the following year until May. They feed on Schmielenarten ( Deschampsia ) and other sweet grasses (Poaceae). Pupation takes place in a thin web on the ground.

Danger

In Germany the moorland straw mule is widespread, often in certain areas, and is therefore listed as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species .
