features

butterfly

With a wingspan of 24 to 28 millimeters, the species is one of the smaller owl butterfly species. The forewing color varies greatly. There are specimens with a clearly whitish brightened border area as well as animals with an almost monochrome blackish tint. The blemishes stand out partly vividly from the ground, but sometimes only slightly reddish to yellowish and are outlined in black. A broad black horizontal line can usually be seen from the pin blemish to the outer transverse line. The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars show reddish brown longitudinal stripes and blackish sclerotization on the posterior margin of the penultimate segment.

Similar species

  • The curry straw mulch ( Oligia strigilis ) is distinguished by some black veins that protrude into the light fringing of the forewings.
  • Oligia dubia is generally drawn a little more dull.
  • The light color elements are missing in the dark straw mulch ( Oligia latruncula ).
  • The bog meadow mulchette ( Oligia fasciuncula ) shows predominantly reddish colorations.
  • In the forest grass moth owl ( Protodeltote pygarga ), the white border does not extend to the apex . Kidney and ring flaws stand out clearly from the darker basic color.
  • The dry grass straw mulch ( Mesoligia furuncula ) differs through a wider, light border.

A genital morphological examination should be carried out in order to exclude doubts in the determination.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The colorful straw mule is distributed from southern Scotland, southern Sweden and Estonia in the north through Europe to central Spain, southern Italy, Bulgaria and the Caucasus in the south. It prefers to inhabit wet areas. These include, for example, meadows, moors, damp heaths and swamp forest areas, sometimes also sandy soils, but not strongly xerothermal habitats.

Way of life

The crepuscular and nocturnal moths fly in one generation from June to August and visit artificial light sources and bait . They have also been observed suckling on rushes ( Juncus effusus ) and dwarf elder flowers ( Sambucus ebulus ). The caterpillars can be found from August and after wintering in the following year until May. They feed on types of sedge ( Carex ), whitish grove ( Luzula luzoloides ), forest dwarfs ( Bracilypodium sylvaticum ) and meadow bluegrass ( Poa pratensis ). The species overwinters as a caterpillar.

Danger

In Germany, the colorful straw mulch is widespread, not uncommon in some areas and is therefore listed on the Red List of Endangered Species as not endangered.
