The dark straw owl ( Oligia latruncula ), also known as mountain heather grass owl, is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of owl butterflies (Noctuidae).
features
butterfly
With a wingspan of 21 to 28 millimeters, the species is one of the smaller owl butterfly species. The forewing coloration varies greatly. There are gray-brown colored specimens as well as animals with dark brown to almost monochrome blackish tint. The blemishes stand out only indistinctly from the surface. The midfield sometimes shimmers red-brown. The outer transverse line is only slightly and evenly curved inwards. The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing.
Similar species
- The very similar dark forms of the colored straw mulch ( Oligia versicolor ), the curry straw mule ( Oligia strigilis ) and Oligia dubia appear on average in larger specimens.
- The bog meadow mulchette ( Oligia fasciuncula ) shows predominantly reddish colorations.
A genital morphological examination should be carried out in order to exclude doubts in the determination.
Geographical distribution and occurrence
The dark straw mule is distributed from northern Scotland and central Fennoscandinavia in the north and south through Europe to central Spain, Sicily and Greece. In the east the distribution extends to the Middle East. In the Alps it can still be found at an altitude of 2000 meters. It prefers to inhabit dry regions. These include, for example, forest areas, heaths, grasslands as well as gardens and parks.
Way of life
The crepuscular and nocturnal moths fly in one generation from May to August and visit artificial light sources and bait . The caterpillars can be found from September and after wintering in the following year until May. They feed on sweet grass ( Poaceae ) and ball grass species ( Dactylis ). The species overwinters as a caterpillar.
Danger
In Germany, the dark straw mulch is widespread, not uncommon in some areas and is therefore listed on the Red List of Endangered Species as not endangered.
