features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 31 to 59 millimeters. The large spread is explained by the fact that the females are much larger than the males. The species shows very conspicuous drawing elements and is therefore unmistakable. The basic color of the forewings is red-brown or dark brown. Kidney and ring blemishes are very large, the kidney blemishes being whitish and the ring blemishes black. The apex area has a milky white shimmer. The basal and inner transverse lines are white, the outer one is black. A clear white W-symbol can be seen in the border area. The hind wings are whitish in the middle and are delimited by a wide black band. In addition, a differently pronounced dark root line can be seen. All the fringes are silky white. The antennae of the males are combed, those of the females have short teeth. The thorax is dense, light-haired, the abdomen alternately curled black and white. The females have a laying tube about five millimeters long at the end of their abdomen .

egg

The spherical egg is flattened on the top and bottom and provided with numerous straight longitudinal ribs. It initially has a light yellow color, which later turns into ash gray tones.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are cylindrical and brown-gray to violet-gray, sometimes almost shiny black and finely pale gray. The side stripes are white-gray and mostly indistinct. The body has very short bristles.

Doll

The dark red-brown pupa shimmers a little lighter on the belly side of the wing sheaths. There are four thorns on the cremaster .

distribution and habitat

The distribution of the nominate form Oxytripia orbiculosa orbiculosa extends very locally from Spain to Japan , that of Oxytripia orbiculosa noctivolans from Anatolia via Iran and Turkmenistan to the Tian Shan massif. Oxytripia orbiculosa is mainly found in steppe areas.

Way of life

The moths are diurnal and nocturnal. During the day, males prefer to fly very quickly in the sunshine close to the ground in search of the females. At night they also visit artificial light sources . They fly in one generation in October. The caterpillars live from April to August. They feed on different types of irises ( irises ). Young caterpillars mine , older ones feed in the rhizome , where they pupate in a loose web. The species overwinters as an egg.
