features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 44 to 52 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings varies in different shades of brown. Occasionally there are also specimens with predominantly gray color elements. Characteristic of the species is the conspicuously yellow-brown filled kidney blemish, which is bent towards the root and approximately shows the shape of a broad L. Cones and ring flaws, on the other hand, hardly stand out from the black-brown middle field. This dark field protrudes with a clear tip into the mostly reddish-brown post-disk region . The hem area behind the whitish wavy line is slightly darkened. A lightened field can often be seen near the apex . The front edge is yellow-brown. The hind wings are colored gray-brown without drawing and show a dark center. There is a reddish-brown head of hair on the black-brown haired thorax . The proboscis of the moths is well developed.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The yellowish egg has a hemispherical shape with a strongly flattened base and is provided with numerous ribs. The micropyl zone and the base area are colored reddish.

Adult caterpillars are green or reddish brown in color. The back, side back and side lines stand out whitish yellow. A dark diamond-shaped drawing with white dots can be seen on the back .

The doll is dark brown in color and has two thorns on the cremaster .

Similar species

The wingspan of Trigonophora crassicornis is 40 to 43 millimeters, that of Trigonophora jode 38 to 42 millimeters. Both species are therefore smaller than Trigonophora flammea , and both are also somewhat paler in color.

distribution and habitat

The nominate form Trigonophora flammea flammea is widespread in Europe in large parts of the Mediterranean area to Normandy and southern England . In addition, the species occurs in the Maghreb states in which the subspecies Trigonophora flammea vividior can be found. This also occurs in parts of Spain . The species lives mainly in dry areas, for example on warm slopes, on bushy grasslands and in karst oak forests.

Way of life

The main flight time of the mostly nocturnal moths are the months September to November. You visit artificial light sources and baits . As fodder plants living from March to April caterpillars different plants are called, for example, Buttercup - ( Ranunculus ), Geum - ( Geum ), Daphne - ( Daphne ), privet - ( Ligustrum ), Stone Linden - ( Phillyrea ), ash - ( Fraxinus ) and oak species ( Quercus ). Pupation takes place in a light web. The egg is hibernating.
