Until 1990 he published his books in the Nation's publishing house; the first two publications were "The multi-door day" (1973) and "Arrival of the migratory birds" (1976). Particularly noteworthy are those volumes of poetry in which his particularly close relationship to the visual arts is recognizable: “Lovers over the city” (1979) and “Hungry from dreams” (1990) - both with poems based on pictures by Marc Chagall - as well as “The unleashed eye . Hommage à Picasso "(1988) or" Pastorale "- poems on paintings and woodcuts by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff," Fels ohne Haste "with poems on pictures by Stefan Friedemann (2003).

For Ulrich Grasnick, the meeting with Marc Chagall in St. Paul de Vence in 1977 was formative for further inspiration through contact between the two art genres of painting and poetry. Chagall's personal dedication to the author of “Lovers over the City” (1979) confirms the close relationship between painter and poet as an outward sign.
