Ulrich Hackenberg (born May 12, 1950 in Herne ) is a German manager and was a member of the Board of Management of Audi AG until December 2015 .

Life

In his youth, Ulrich Hackenberg attended the private boarding school Landschulheim Schloss Heessen with the help of a gifted scholarship , where he also obtained his Abitur. Hackenberg studied mechanical engineering in the field of vehicle technology at RWTH Aachen University , where he received his doctorate in 1984 at the Institute for Motor Vehicles.

Act

Hackenberg began his automotive career at Audi AG and became head of the main group vehicle mechanics . In 1989 he took over the management of the concept definition and later the technical project management of the entire product range. In 1998 he moved to Volkswagen AG. There he was in charge of body development and car concept development . In addition, he worked in technical development at Rolls Royce Bentley Motor Cars Ltd. where he restructured the development department. In 2002 Hackenberg returned to Audi AG, where, among other things, he took over the management of the concept development, body development, electrics / electronics division and developed the modular longitudinal construction kit there .

When Martin Winterkorn became Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG on January 1, 2007 , he took Hackenberg with him to Wolfsburg, among other executives. There he became a member of the Volkswagen brand board for the development division .

On July 1, 2013, Hackenberg became Head of Development at Audi, replacing Wolfgang Dürheimer.

Due to the VW emissions scandal , Hackenberg was given leave of absence in September 2015. In the surveys of the VW group audit, allegations were raised against him as head of development at the time, and on December 3, 2015 he resigned from the Audi board.

At the end of 2016, Hackenberg was appointed to the supervisory board of the Finnish contract manufacturer Valmet Automotive .

Trivia

Hackenberg appears reserved and emphatically inconspicuous. However, he was considered one of the strategists at Volkswagen who prepared the field to outperform Toyota. “Our goal is to be the most innovative volume manufacturer on the world market. In addition, there is our quality requirement paired with the value of the products, ”he defined the 2018 strategy of the Volkswagen Group.
