The differentiated upper level is housed in an extension.

The school grounds cover an area of around eleven hectares.

The LSH is also open on weekends. Boarding school students come from all over Germany and also from abroad, u. a. from China, Russia, Austria, Switzerland and Mexico.

The boarding school, together with the school, offers various groups and leisure activities, including a. Football, volleyball, basketball, rowing, golf, archery, fencing, fitness, swimming, diving, etc. A total of up to 30 different groups and activities are offered.

history

In 1957, the Landschulheim Schloss Heessen high school was founded by Arthur Theodor Gruelich . Arthur Theodor Gruelich, educator and author, wanted to create a school that is oriented towards reform education, but also teaches discipline and respect.

On May 2, 1957, the history of the grammar school and boarding school began with 48 boarding students. At first the school was only closed in one go. The demand for boarding school places increased from year to year, and after a short time the rooms were no longer sufficient. The remodeling of parts of the gatehouse was of little help, as the school inspectorate required "proper" classrooms for the school.

In 1961 Elisabeth Kaiser came to the Landschulheim Schloss Heessen, who reformed the school educationally. She supported the work of the house for more than 30 years. During this time the concept of the all-day school was developed, which at that time was regarded as educationally revolutionary.

On August 8, 1967, the founder and director of the school, Arthur Theodor Gruelich, died.

In the early 1970s, the school was on the verge of financial ruin due to the accumulation of debts that the country's contributions and grants could not pay. In 1971 the "Association of Friends and Patrons of the Landschulheims Schloss Heessen e. V. “was founded in order to ensure the necessary investments. In 1972 Theodor Sanders took over the management of the school and fundamentally restructured the school. The school grew and achieved a balanced budget. The 1972 school reform brought with it the differentiated upper level. In order to offer an optimal range of courses for the students, the school had to be two-class, continuously from grade 5.

In 1995 the school sponsoring association had the idea of comprehensively expanding the educational offer outside the castle. Kindergarten and elementary school should be available as day care offers. The concept envisaged accompanying a child's career from kindergarten to high school in order to prepare students for academic careers from childhood. However, negotiations with the owners about new buildings failed.

From 2000 the school had to fear for its location, as the contracts of the Ketteler-Boeselager family expired. In 2008 the Heessen location was secured for another 30 years, the location will remain in place until at least 2038. In 2013 the extension was opened as a new upper school center.

Heessen Castle

The Landschulheim Schloss Heessen is divided into five buildings. The main building, as the largest, offers a large and small dining room as well as the teachers' room, kitchen, internet room, drinks store, secretariat, classrooms and living rooms for the lower and middle grades of boys and girls, as well as the chapel.

The Rentei was converted into quarters for the boys' upper school and school rooms. The so-called "vault" located here is an in-house bar restaurant, where celebrations are also held. In addition to the girls' quarters, the gatehouse also includes other classrooms. In the school building, as the newest building, there were originally quarters, which are now used as functional and classrooms.

The upper school center houses the upper school and is located somewhat separately in front of the palace complex. This is where the boys' upper school quarter and classrooms are located on an area of 1600 m². There is also a café, a library, a staff room and various rooms where students can study and relax. The new building was inaugurated in 2013.

There is also a tea house, an island with a wooded area, a volleyball court, an Africa house (unused) and a rose garden.
