Ulrich Herkenhoff (* 1966 in Osnabrück ) is a German composer and pan flutist .

biography

Ulrich Herkenhoff received his first piano lessons at the age of six. At the age of fourteen he got to know the pan flute in a concert by the Romanian Gheorghe Zamfir . After this experience, detailed studies on this instrument followed.

After studying flute at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich with a subsequent advanced training class on the pan flute with Professor Jochen Gärtner , Herkenhoff quickly advanced to become an internationally sought-after soloist. He received special support in the field of Romanian folklore from the Swiss ethnomusicologist and publisher Marcel Cellier , the discoverer Gheorghe Zamfirs. Together with Cellier (organ) he made his first recording of Romanian improvisations in 1990. As an interpreter of “classical” works, Herkenhoff has already induced several contemporary composers to write original compositions for the panpipe.

"The Art of Pan" stands for his ambitious project to establish the pan flute as a concert instrument to be taken seriously.

Meanwhile, Herkenhoff is also a sought-after soloist in the field of film music . Among other things, he worked on the Oscar-winning music for The Lord of the Rings . His most recent film music recording took place in Budapest at the beginning of October 2004 for the film adaptation of Imre Kertész 's novel Unhappy with the music of Ennio Morricone .

Ulrich Herkenhoff is also active in the educational field and, as a publisher, dedicates himself to the publication of panflute literature. All of the instruments he plays come from his own production.
