Ulrich Schmid (Slavicist)
Ulrich M. Schmid (born October 23, 1965 in Zurich ) is a Swiss Slavist , literary critic and university professor.
Life
Ulrich Schmid attended primary school in Bielefeld and later passed the Matura examination in Zurich . This was followed by studies in Slavic, German and political science at the universities of Zurich , Heidelberg and Leningrad . From 1992 to 2000, Schmid was a research assistant for literary studies at the Slavonic Seminar at the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in 1995 with a thesis on Fjodor Sologub . In 1999 he completed his habilitation on the subject of “I drafts. Russian autobiographies between Avvakum and Gercen ». In 1995/96 Schmid did research as a visiting fellow at Harvard University .
From 2000 to 2003 Ulrich Schmid was Assistant Professor for Slavic Literature at the University of Basel, from 2003 to 2005 SNSF professor at the Institute for Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Bern . In addition, he held teaching positions at various universities. In 2005 he was appointed full professor of Slavic literature at the Slavic Seminar / Lotman Institute at the Ruhr University in Bochum . Since April 2007 Ulrich Schmid has been Associate Professor for Russian Culture and Society at the University of St. Gallen . In 2012 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . Since February 2020 he has been Vice-Rector for External Relations at the University of St. Gallen.
Schmid's areas of expertise include Russian, Ukrainian and Polish literature, philosophy and culture, as well as literary and media theory, autobiography and internet literature. Schmid is co-editor of the series "Basler Studies on the Cultural History of Eastern Europe" (BSKO), which he founded at the Zurich-based Pano-Verlag. He has also emerged as a translator and editor of thematic anthologies (philosophy of religion, media theory, etc.).
Ulrich Schmid has been a permanent freelancer in the features section of the Neue Zürcher Zeitung since 1993 .
