Ulrich Stephan (doctor)

Ulrich Stephan (born November 28, 1929 in Hagen ; † February 6, 2009 ) was a German physician. He was a professor at the Essen University Hospital .

Stephan was first a pediatrician at the Erlangen University Hospital, where he set up the first outpatient clinic for cystic fibrosis patients in the Franconian region . He headed the outpatient clinic for twenty years until he accepted a call from the University of Essen on May 1, 1977 and took over the management of the children's clinic at the University of Essen. He also took over the chair for general pediatrics, with which he was appointed full professor. Stephan continued his scientific work on research into cystic fibrosis and among other things developed a rapid test to detect this disease.

Stephan remained a member of the Medical Faculty until his retirement in 1995, of which he was Dean from 1980 to 1981. From 1989 to 1995 he was Medical Director of the University Hospital Essen. Stephan was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class on November 11, 1996 for his services to cystic fibrosis patients.
