Wolfgang Utzt

Wolfgang Utzt (born October 1, 1941 in Senftenberg ; † April 25, 2020 in Frankfurt an der Oder ) was a German make- up artist . Already at the age of 19 he worked as a trainee at the Deutsches Theater Berlin , and his professional career was closely connected to this stage.

After training as a make-up artist with Herbert Zensch (1960-63) and a diploma in make-up design at the Dresden University of Fine Arts (1973), he became head make-up artist at the German Theater in 1979, where he managed the workshops with 14 make-up artists and trainees and worked with the directors Heiner Müller , Thomas Langhoff , Jürgen Gosch , Frank Castorf , Alexander Lang , Friedo Solter , Hans Neuenfels , Robert Wilson and many others.

More than 100 pieces were supervised by Utzt from the concept to the staging. He also taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, at the Konrad Wolf Academy for Film and Television and at the Berlin-Weißensee Academy of Art . An extensive collection of his masks and figurines is in the possession of the Stadtmuseum Berlin Foundation .
