Ulrich X. (Regenstein-Blankenburg)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Count Ulrich von Regenstein , in the count also Ulrich XI. or the younger (* 1499 ; † March 22, 1551 ; buried in Blankenburg (Harz) ) was regent of the counties of Regenstein and Blankenburg in the Harz .

Life

He came from the family of Counts von Regenstein and was the son of Count Ulrich (IX.) Von Regenstein († 1524) and Countess Anna von Hohnstein († 1539).

Ulrich suffered enormous blows of fate. During a visit to Heldrungen he picked up a self-igniting rifle, although he did not notice that it was loaded. Shots broke out with which he killed Curt Barth and Günther von Berka. To atone for this accident, he donated 1,000 guilders, which he paid out to his father-in-law Ernst II von Mansfeld in 1524. He left the interest to the heirs of the two killed for use for charitable purposes. The St. Georg Hospital in Stolberg (Harz) was able to benefit from the annual payments that were not made until the Count of Mansfeld became indebted in the 1560s.

Another blow was the early death of his first wife, Countess Barbara von Mansfeld (1505–1529), whom he had married in 1524. She was the daughter of Count Ernst von Mansfeld (1479–1531) and his first wife Barbara von Querfurt (1483–1511).

The greatest loss for Ulrich von Regenstein, however, was the nightly arson of his castle in Blankenburg on November 19, 1546. The fire surprised him and his family in their sleep. He only managed to save his life with major burns. His second wife, Countess Magdalena zu Stolberg (1511–1546), daughter of Count Botho zu Stolberg (1467–1538), died in the flames.
