Ulrike Wieland

Ulrike Wieland (* 1961 ) is a doctor and virologist . She is a professor, senior physician and deputy head of the Institute for Virology and head of the National Reference Center for Papilloma and Polyoma Viruses at the University of Cologne . Her main research interests are epidemiology, diagnostics and therapy of human papilloma virus infections and cutaneous polyomavirus infections.

Career

Ulrike Wieland studied human medicine in Erlangen and received her doctorate there in 1988 with a comparative study of contact eczema .

In 1996 she passed her medical examination for microbiology , virology and infection epidemiology and became a senior physician at the Institute for Virology at the University Clinic in Cologne. There she completed her habilitation in 1999 with a thesis on the viral infectivity factor (vif) of the HI virus and received the corresponding teaching license. The German Association for Combating Viral Diseases and the Society for Virology awarded them the 2012 “Clinical Virology” science award.

Since 2018 she has headed the National Reference Center for Papilloma and Polyoma Viruses, which is based at her institute.

Wieland is a member of various specialist societies, such as the Joint Diagnostics Commission of the German Association for Combating Viral Diseases and the Society for Virology, the Infection Prevention Working Group at Cologne University Hospital, and the Scientific Advisory Board of the Robert Koch Institute .
