Ultimate Spinach was an American psychedelic rock band from Boston , Massachusetts . The band was exemplary for the "Bosstown Sound", which should be established as a counterweight to the "San Francisco Sound" of the west coast .
history
Ultimate Spinach emerged in 1967 from the previous band, Underground Cinema. Ian Bruce-Douglas said of the band name: "Ultimate Spinach is mind food." The management was taken over by Alan Lorber, who wanted to turn Boston into a center of pop and rock music. The first songs were recorded in September and October 1967, composed by Ian Bruce-Douglas and produced by Alan Lorber. The self-titled debut album was released on January 6, 1968, it came to number 34 on the Billboard 200. The band toured with Big Brother and the Holding Company and the Youngbloods , among others .
In April 1968 Ultimate Spinach recorded new songs for the follow-up album, again composed exclusively by Ian Bruce-Douglas and again produced by Alan Lorber.
