Summary

SAGA 1: Tragedy over Aarb

The tragedy over Aarb ( Japanese : ア ー ブ の 悲劇) took place before Episode 5 of the series and is told from Hikari's flashback .

Hikari was once an unnamed Ultraman who worked as a scientist for the Land of Light. He traveled to the planet Aarb, a peaceful planet that had long since known no conflict, to study its surroundings. After landing, he was warmly welcomed by the inhabitants of the planet, and some of them merged into a unique being as a means of communication. Through evolution, the inhabitants of man had assimilated and become one with the planet. Hikari doubted their hospitality, but the aarb reassured him, knowing that the giant's origins came from the Land of Light, famous for the space garrison organization that protected the galaxy for years. Fascinated by the beauty of the planet, Hikari wanted to make a living from it, but Aarb forbade him from Tsurugi due to her prophecy. Her planet was predicted to be attacked by a space monster and if that happened a hero would descend from the sky, put on the armor of light and be united with the soil of Aarb.

To save the planet, the scientist flew into space and reached an unknown planet and sought the help of a legendary giant to gain strength. A hooded figure tested him with a shower of rain and ordered it to be extinguished as if it were his own heart. The hooded man revealed himself to be Ultraman King when he gave Hikari the knight Brace, but warned him that "the purest water is the easiest to pollute".

Upon returning to the planet Aarb, Hikari found out that the prophecy took place when a monster attacked the planet and turned it into a barren wasteland. Aarb's residents tried to fight back, but some of them were worn out. Ignoring King's own advice, Hikari was driven by his own anger and attacked the monster in a furious rage, but his lack of training as a warrior put him at a disadvantage. The monster withdrew, leaving Hikari in despair because he could not protect Aarb until the spirits of the fallen inhabitants assimilated with him and turned into the warrior known as the Hunter Knight Tsurugi. Tsurugi traveled to countless planets and learned the name of the monster, Bogar, who had invaded countless planets and devoured their inhabitants. Tsurugi soon followed the monster to the next destination: Earth.

SAGA 2: Test of a Hero

Test of a Hero ( Japanese : 勇者 の 試練) took place after episode 17 of the series.

After leaving Earth and entrusting Mebius with the knight's clamp, Hikari flew into space and encountered a Bemstar on his journey. After losing Knight Brace, he had to fight on his own. In the middle of the battle, Zoffy appeared and reprimanded Hikari for his reckless decision to fight the monster. Hikari had died once, but the will of his human host, Kazuya Serizawa, was the reason Ultra's mother gave him a new life. He also remembered how Mebius had fought on earth because he was captivated by the hearts of mankind, while once he went mad for his inability to protect Aarb and made him lose his heart once. Although he could not go back in time, he still had life to protect and so Zoffy Hikari helped defeat the monster. After the battle, Hikari noticed another Bemstar heading for Earth. However, Zoffy said to believe in Mebius when Hikari was invited to join the space garrison.

The battle was watched by Ultraman King when Hikari realized his belief that his encounter with his friends helped him escape from the darkness.

SAGA 3: Return of Light

Return of Light ( Japanese : 光 の 帰 還) took place before episode 35 of the series.

Ultra's father sensed an impending threat on earth. Although he hesitated to send Hikari, Zoffy reassured him otherwise and allowed the young warrior to go. While approaching Earth, Hikari received an ultra-shield from Mebius to meet him on the planet Aarb, but on his arrival an impostor was discovered who soon assumed the appearance of Hunter Knight Tsurugi and planned to act in this form Earth to go. When his offer to Hikari was rejected, the impostor turned out to be Alien Babarue, who had once stolen the Ultra-Key from the Land of Light. During the fight, Babarue sealed Hikari in an iceberg and again offered him a place under his wings, but left him to die on the planet when the latter refused.

In his frozen state, Hikari was visited by the spirit Aarbs, who gave him the strength to free himself and give him the form of Hunter Knight Tsurugi again. Unlike before, where his equipment was called the armor of vengeance for his only agenda of vengeance, this was instead the hero's armor and was consistent with the Tsurugi prophecy that was foretold beforehand. Hikari used his newfound power to defeat Babarue before the alien retreated and fled to Earth. When Hikari left, Ultraman King noticed that a new hero was born and had recognized the former as Ultraman.

production

Due to the low budget of the series, the series opted for a chroma key based background for their first Cyclorama element. Yuji Kobayashi noted that the side story element is based on the Star Wars film, while Hikari's approach to the father of Ultra is compared to that of the 1978 Superman film.
