Ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy

The ultrasonic attenuation spectroscopy is a method for determining the properties of liquids and particles in liquids by means of ultrasound .

The measured variable is the attenuation of an ultrasonic wave: If a wave passes through a liquid in which particles are suspended , the intensity of this wave is weakened (attenuated). The strength of the damping depends on

  • the material properties,
  • the concentration of any particles present as well as
  • the size of the suspended particles.

These relationships and dependencies can be used to determine the material properties or the particle size and their distribution in heterogeneous systems (such as suspensions and emulsions ).

When using the method for determining the size of the particles, the measuring range theoretically covers the nanometer range and the size range up to a few millimeters. The use of the method is internationally standardized (see ISO 20998-1: 2006).
