Ulvöhamn is an old fishing village on the island of Norra Ulvön , in the archipelago of the Swedish municipality of Örnsköldsvik . In the days of the Gävle fishermen , Ulvöhamn was their most important base. The place is located on Ulvösundet, a narrow sound that separates the two islands of Norra Ulvön and Södra Ulvön. The location is very protected, which is why the Gävle fishermen have been fishing there since at least the beginning of the 17th century.

history

In 1613, seven fishermen lived in Ulvöhamn with their families. In 1622 the Ulvö Gamla Kapell was built, the oldest preserved wooden building in Ångermanland . According to surveys carried out in 1704, there were 32 sheds in Ulvöhamn at that time, which local farmers rented out to the Gävle fishermen. Above the shed there were farm buildings and simple residential buildings with only one room. In the middle of the village there was a large enclosure in which the Gävle fishermen's goats were locked up at night.

When the Gävle fishermen stopped going to their fishing villages, the population of Ulvöhamn settled there all year round; in 1905, 184 people lived here. In summer up to 250 people lived in the village. The original 32 sheds had been converted into boat houses and two new buildings were added. Until the beginning of the 20th century, only a handful of the buildings in Ulvöhamn had been painted, but now they were all gradually being painted a falu red. The houses were much more spacious than in the days of the Gävlefischer, with living room, kitchen and bedroom. Most of the residents of Ulvöhamn were still fishermen; above the village they also grew potatoes and hops. Some families still had goats, but most of them had bought cows instead.

Ulvöhamn was the center of the production of surströmming , in 1890 13,000 3-liter barrels of surströmming were sold. The company Ulvö Salteribolag began to insert surströmming in cans in 1899, the production capacity was 500 to 600 cans per day. From 1900 onwards, more and more steamships drove along the Ångermanland coast, with these the surstromming produced could also be sold to distant customers. A hotel was built between 1904 and 1905 and Ulvöhamn became a holiday destination. As a result, the population began to decline and young people went to the mainland to live and work.

In the 1940s there were three surstromming factories in operation, producing up to 1.3 million cans a year. Due to financial problems, the last large surstromming factory was shut down in 1983, today only small quantities are produced. In 1971 the primary school in the village was closed. Almost 50 people live in Ulvöhamn all year round, and tourists visit the village in summer. In the main season there are several daily ferry connections to Köpmanholmen and Ullånger , in winter only once a day.
