Umetate-chi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Umetate-chi ( Japanese 埋 (め) 立 (て) 地 ) is a Japanese term and describes the landfill areas on the coast that are used to reclaim land .

In Japan such landfills are mainly used for the settlement of basic industries. On the one hand, this has the advantage that this industry is close to the coast and raw materials (e.g. coal, iron ore) that are delivered by ship come directly into operation without any further transport routes. On the other hand, the inland areas are also relieved. In Japan in particular there is a great shortage of space - it is therefore often necessary to outsource large companies. However, the landfills also have ecological disadvantages. Japanese fishermen often complain that fish stocks are declining.
