Una quadrilogia comprises four plays, all of which deal with the theme of the artist's existence: The first play L'odore assordante del bianco (first performance 2005: Riccione) is about Vincent van Gogh , who is in a mental hospital and wants to convince everyone of his sanity . In the second play Processo a Dio (world premiere in 2006 in Verona), the Jewish actress Elga Firsch, liberated from the Allies in the Majdanek concentration camp, charges against SS-Scharführer Reinhard. The third play, Memorie del boia (premiered in 2004 in Florence) is about a conversation about the executioner activity between the former executioner Sanson and the French artist Honoré de Balzac, who initially presented himself under a false identity . In the last play La fine di Shavuoth the actor Jizchak Löwy and the writer Franz Kafka appear, who start a conversation about love, happiness, inhibitions and fear under the pretext of being locked in a Prague theater.

Reality and unreality, appearances and fiction are themes that appear constantly in Massini's plays. In the two plays L´odore assordante del bianco and Memorie del boia in particular, it is not clear whether the protagonists are actually talking to another person or whether they are talking to themselves . Many of his plays take place in a single room. These rooms are often connected with various colors and are supposed to evoke certain associations: The white walls of the mental hospital of L´odore assordante del bianco stand for Van Gogh's hopelessness, the dark room in Processo a Dio , in which SS-Scharführer Reinhard the trial is made, reflects Elga Firsch's anger.

As in other previously published works by Stefano Massini, the conversation between the characters is at the center of his pieces and is intended to encourage the audience to reflect.

Awards

Stefano Massini received the Premio Pier Vittorio Tondelli in 2005 for the play L'odore assordante del bianco . In 2007 he was awarded the Premio Nazionale della Critica .
