Independence Day celebrations in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw

The Polish Independence Day ( Polish Narodowe Święto Niepodległości ) is a national holiday in Poland , which is celebrated on November 11th every year . The occasion is the regaining of independence of the state in 1918 after 123 years of division by Prussia , Austria-Hungary and Russia .

The celebrations took place for the first time in 1937. November 11th was set as the date, as the Second Polish Republic began on this day in 1918 , when Józef Piłsudski took over command of the Polish troops through the Regency Council and shortly afterwards he was given the leadership of the Polish state.

After the Second World War , the date was moved to July 22 (publication of the manifesto of the Communist Lublin Committee on July 22, 1944), and in 1989 it was moved back to the original date.

In the past few years there have been repeated riots in which nationalists fought violently with the police forces at the rallies. Especially in Warsaw there were riots with arrests during "independence marches" by nationalists and right-wing extremists. On November 11, 2013, there were riots in front of the Russian embassy and stones and fireworks were thrown at it. The following day, the Polish ambassador to Russia Wojciech Zajączkowski was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
