Under Defeat is a shoot-'em-up video game for Sega Dreamcast , NAOMI , PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 developed by the Japanese company G.rev . It is one of the last official Dreamcast games and was marketed by the manufacturer as "the last Dreamcast game". However, three more Dreamcast games appeared in spring 2007, including Last Hope , which was developed in Germany , Trigger Heart Exelica by Warashi and Karous by Milestone . The latter two were also released with an official SEGA license.

On June 27, 2011 it was announced that a remake of the game called Under Defeat HD would be released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Rising Star Games, the publisher of these two ports, released it on February 23, 2012 in Japan, November 28 in North America, and January 23, 2013 in Europe. A North American Xbox 360 version has not yet appeared.

The plot of Under Defeat takes place in an alternate world and alludes to the time of the Second World War . The player takes over the control of a fighter pilot of the "empire", a German speaking faction. Pilots from the hostile faction, the “Union”, speak English and their troops are similar to those of the Allies .

Although Under Defeat was released very late, five years after Dreamcast production ended, the Dreamcast version sold very well, even surpassing sales for some of the PSP games released at the same time . Despite this success, Under Defeat is G.rev's last Dreamcast game to date.

The gameplay is similar to traditional games of the genre and is very reminiscent of some games from Toaplan , in particular Twin Cobra . Under Defeat uses 3D graphics and has a slightly angled view to convey the gameplay more intensively to the player.

Sales versions

There are three different versions of Under Defeat for Dreamcast:

The standard version only contains the actual game, while the limited edition contains an alternative packaging and a soundtrack CD.

There is also the Sega Direct version , which was only sold through SEGA's Japanese online shop, Sega Direct. In addition to the game itself and a soundtrack CD, it also contains a wall poster and sticker.
