The cantata is divided into three parts: the first part describes the turmoil in the world before the arrival of the Messiah (Chorthema De profundis ), the second part consists of a potpourri based on the melodies of many well-known Christmas carols such as O du merry , Silent Night , Es has sprung a rose or Il est né le divin enfant . The third part is a solemn chorus in C major (Laudate dominum) , which ends in the orchestral conclusion (with a resumption of the dissonances from the first part).
