Il est né le divin enfant

Il est né, le divin enfant ( It is born, the divine child ) is a French Christmas carol that commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and its announcement by the prophets. Its melody comes from the old French hunting song La tête bizarde .

The melody was first published in the second half of the 19th century in a Lorraine collection of Christmas carols ( Airs des Noëls lorrains ), which the organist of the cathedral of Saint-Dié-des-Vosges Jean-Romary Grosjean (1815–1888) has put together. The text first appeared in the Noëls anciens collection (1875) by Dom Georges Legeay .

More modern choral versions come from David Willcocks , John Rutter and Kurt Suttner . Gabriel Fauré created several arrangements, including for solo voice and organ (1888), choir and organ (1923) and for children's choir and chamber orchestra (1938).

Diethard Zils created the German text Heller Stern in der Dunkel Nacht for the melody .
