Unea , also called Bali or Merite , is a volcanic island of Papua New Guinea , located in the Bismarck Archipelago , north of New Britain .
Unea has an area of 33.0 km². For the census on July 9, 2000, 8802 inhabitants were counted. It is the most populous and after Garove the second largest of the Vitu Islands and is located in the province of West New Britain .
The almost circular island has a diameter of about 7 km and protrudes 591 m from the sea at its highest point in the summit of the volcanic cone Kumbu , making it the highest of the Vitu Islands.
