Hungary in Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term Hungary in Germany is not clearly defined. In part, this refers to those residents of Germany who see themselves as ethnic Magyars . You can be a citizen of Germany, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia or another country. In another understanding, these are Hungarian citizens living in Germany , regardless of the ethnic group to which they belong. These can also be ethnic Romanians, Serbs, or members of other minorities in Hungary. Members of the Sinti and Roma with Hungarian passports are also counted as Hungarians in Germany. As of December 31, 2018, there were 207,025 persons with Hungarian citizenship registered in Germany.

Most of them only emigrated to Germany after Hungary joined the EU in 2004 and 2011 after the introduction of the free movement of workers , among other things because of the difficult and political and economic situation in Hungary under Viktor Orbán , according to the Orbán-critical and liberal newspaper Pester Lloyd . In 2014, Hungarians were in 13th place among all foreign population groups in Germany.

Culture

The migration from Hungary also produced a long historical tradition and many famous personalities, including Elisabeth of Thuringia , daughter of the Hungarian King Andreas II.

In 2006/2007 Hungary had its country and its culture in Germany through a whole series of cultural events, including the exhibition “Germans in Hungary - Hungarians in Germany. European lifeworlds ”, presented.
