Ungericht is a term from the medieval German legal language and referred to an intentional criminal injustice that was punished with penalties to life or limb due to its severity. In the Sachsenspiegel , it is differentiated from tortious injustice, which could be atoned for with a monetary payment ( Wer- or Manngeld ) .

A wrongdoing was heard before the neck court. If the offender was convicted, the sentence consisted of corporal punishment , at least mutilation and usually the death penalty .

The death penalty was imposed for theft exceeding three shillings, robbery, violating the peace, adultery, rape, sorcery, and poisoning.
