The Unimog 419 is a vehicle in the Unimog series that was developed as a pioneer vehicle for the US Army on the basis of the Unimog 406 . Daimler-Benz built this vehicle from 1986 to 1991 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Gaggenau a total of 2,416 times, all vehicles were delivered to the USA and used exclusively by the US Army and the Marines. Four prototypes were created. The Unimog 419 was sold under the brand name Freightliner . Most of the vehicles were so-called Small Emplacement Excavators , or SEE Tractors for short. In 2001 it was decided that 2200 of the 2416 vehicles built should be overhauled by Daimler.
Technically, the vehicles are based on the Unimog 406, but a more powerful 81 kW engine was installed. The SEE Tractor has a front shovel instead of a front linkage and an excavator arm at the rear. Although the vehicle was produced in Gaggenau in Germany, many parts were supplied from the USA to meet the requirements of the US military. This includes the entire 24-volt on-board electrical system. The paint job with the American military color turned out to be complex.
