On March 3, 1991, a Boeing 737-200 , which was on United Airlines Flight 585 , crashed while approaching Colorado Springs Airport due to a sudden uncontrolled deflection of the rudder . None of the 25 people on board survived.
course
The pilots began the visual approach to runway 35 at around 9.43 am. The approach was restless as it was very windy. At an altitude of approximately 300 meters (1000 feet ) , the Boeing 737 suddenly rolled to the right and fell almost vertically to the ground.
Cause of accident
The investigators suspected an uncontrolled deflection of the rudder , but could not prove it. Only years later and after other incidents such as the crash of USAir Flight 427 did the investigators find out that a blocked valve on the rudder control unit (PCU) had caused the rudder to suddenly fully deflect.
