Borg Mesch (born December 17, 1869 in Sundsvall ; † October 20, 1956 ) was a Swedish photographer and mountaineer who worked mainly in Lapland .

Career

Emil Ragnar Borg Mesch was born in Sundsvall and stayed in Landskrona for a while . After his apprenticeship with Edvard Lundholm, he opened his own photo studio in Gävle in 1891 , then in Ockelbo and later in Karlskrona , before settling in Luossavaara , later Kiruna in Lapland , in 1899 and quickly becoming a sought-after photographer.

His contemporaries described him as an enterprising adventurer and he was a legend even in his lifetime.

Mesch captured the mountains, the life of the Sami , the mountain world at Kebnekaise and the construction of the ore railway in photos . Portraits, group portraits and panoramic landscapes are part of his work.

Mesch traveled extensively within Sweden, and the USA was also one of his destinations.

Mesch was not only a valued photographer, but also made a name for himself as a mountaineer. A mountain peak , the Boring Toppen of the Akka mountain range in the Stora Sjöfallet National Park , was named after Borg Mesch.

In 1977 photographs by Mesch were exhibited at documenta 6 with the focus on 150 years of photography . The city of Kiruna has a large number of his photographs in its collection.
