The Luossavaara is one of the two ore mountains near the northern Swedish city of Kiruna . In the past, iron ore was also extracted in this mountain , but today the mining of the Kiruna iron ore mine is limited to the second ore mountain Kiirunavaara . In both mountains the apatite iron ore lies between layers of syenite porphyry and quartz porphyry . The ore has a content of 61% iron and just under 1% phosphorus.
The seam is about 700 m long and up to 40 m thick. In addition to magnetite , it also contains small amounts of actinolite and titanite . The mine was initially operated as an opencast mine . Additional quarries reached a depth of 365 m in the north and up to 250 m in the south. From 1919 to 1976 and 1981 to 1985 a total of 16.65 million tons of ore were mined.
The magnetite ore from Kiruna is processed into pellets by the mining company LKAB ( Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolaget ) and transported by ore rail either to Narvik or Luleå .
There is now a ski lift on the higher part of the mountain .
