The Universal Superliner was a series of multi-purpose liner general cargo ships operated by the Finnish shipping company Finnlines. The ships were built from 1970 to 1972 in three units at the Emden Nordseewerke .
details
The type of ship was developed with a view to the special requirements of the Finnish clients. The term Universal Superliner stands for the particularly flexible concept of the three general cargo liner ships, each costing around 30 million Deutschmarks.
Against the background of the changed market conditions in the course of the global container revolution and the increasing RoRo traffic of the early 1970s, the ships were equipped with a particularly diverse range of loading and unloading equipment. The superliners had superstructures about three quarters aft above the machinery and six cargo holds with a volume of 36,216 m³ (bulk goods). Five holds were arranged in front of the deckhouse and one hold behind the deckhouse. In addition to the hatch covers for cargo handling in the lift on / lift off procedure, rolling cargo could be loaded and unloaded via the stern ramp up to cargo hold 2, for which purpose the tween decks could be moved upwards. In addition, the ships each had three side ports with cargo lifts for palletized cargo, such as paper rolls. On the one hand, 18 cargo booms with 5/10 tonnes were available as their own loading gear, and each ship also had two 40-tonne cambered heavy-lift booms that could lift up to 72 tonnes in coupled operation. The middle holds next to the heavy lift trees were set up for container transport. The total container capacity was 530 TEU . Small lock holds were located under the quarterdeck, and sweet oil tanks were installed under hold 1.
A Sulzer six - cylinder two - stroke diesel engine that acted directly on the fixed propeller served as the drive . The engine had an output of 16,000 hp and allowed a speed of around 20 knots. The on-board energy was provided by three auxiliary diesels , each with an output of 788 kilowatts. A bow thruster was available to support the docking and casting off maneuvers.
