The Universidad Científica del Sur (in English: Scientific University of the South ) is a private university located in the Peruvian capital Lima . Located south of the capital, this university is only a few hundred meters from the Pacific Ocean; as well as from the nearby nature reserve “ Refugio de Vida Silvestre Pantanos de Villa ”. The university was officially opened in 1998 under the direction of co-founder José Carlos Dextre.

The university began its academic career with courses in human medicine and systems engineering. Particular emphasis was placed on personalized, study-related and environmentally conscious training for students. Ecological aspects not only form an important part of the image of the university, but are also anchored in the university principles. Not least because of the ecological difficulties in their own country, which are in conflict with the biodiversity of the continent, the Científica aims to train responsible academics. The class sizes and the professor-related support in the classroom are just as important. Lectures are not held in the classic German sense; All lessons are carried out in the form of tutorials and compulsory courses in classrooms for 20 to 40 people.

In the years since its inception, the University of Científica del Sur has seen steady demographic and academic growth. There are currently 18 Bachelor; 13 master’s degree programs and numerous professional training courses in a wide variety of specialist areas are offered.

history

In 1996 well-known representatives of the Peruvian education sector decided to found a new university under the direction of Ing.José Dextre Chacón. After years of effort, on February 5, 1998, the Peruvian National Council for the Operation of Universities (Consejo Nacional para la Autorización de Funcionamiento de Universidades) approved the establishment of the Universidad Científica del Sur by means of resolution N ° 356-98-CONAFU. The first administrative commission received the prominent Peruvian neurologist Dr. Fernando Cabieses, who also became the first rector of the university. At the same time, Ing. Dextre remained in the office of President of the Board of Directors of the foundation organization. The founding board was completed by the academic vice president Dr. Chacón Polar, a Peruvian doctor with a distinguished career in medical education. The opening ceremony was held at the Pedro Osma Museum on March 26, 1998, and was attended by distinguished people.

On July 12, 1998, the advertising for university places officially began, whereby in September of the same year the inauguration of academic activities took place as part of a welcome event with the participation of all authorities, lecturers, parents, students and guests. The first academic semester began with around fifty students who were divided between the courses in human medicine and systems engineering. In 2002, the university management appointed the renowned researcher and former rector of the national Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos , Dr. Amiel Pérez has been invited to take on the post of Academic Vice President. After approval by the Peruvian National Council for the Operation of Universities (CONAFU), he was also awarded the post of Vice Rector for Research.

In 2007, after the university had been in operation for almost ten years, Fernando Cabieses resigned from the post of rector for health reasons. It was during these years that the institution established itself within the country's university and academic community. The dean of the medical faculty Dr. Agustín Iza held the post of Rector. In 2009, the infrastructure of the university was further expanded in cooperation with the Latam Perú Foundation. The expansion work provided for a faculty for "postgraduate" in the San Borja district, but this project was abandoned at the request of the residents of the district; instead, the post-graduate faculty was relocated to the central district of distrito de Miraflores , which is also where the university's dental clinic is located.

In 2013 the university inaugurated the research building "Fernando Cabieses Molina" in the Villa campus, in honor of the late former rector of the university, who was also honored at the state level for his contributions to the development and research of medicine. On August 9 of the same year, Dr. Amiel raised to the office of rector of the university.

In the 15 years of the university's existence, there has been significant growth, both in terms of the number of students and the educational offer. The university currently offers 18 bachelor's degree programs, with more than two thousand students in its pre-graduate courses. In addition, the university offers 13 master’s courses, numerous diploma courses and various subject-specific courses in its faculties. The move of the secretariat and all administrative areas to the Campus Villa began in 2011, which is one of the most innovative of its kind in the country due to its 100,000 m² and extensive green spaces.

The academic year

The academic year consists of two academic semesters, each lasting 18 weeks. All courses are designed to be completed within one academic semester. The first academic semester of a year is usually held between April and July; whereas the second semester takes place between August and December. In the past, summer courses were also offered in the months of January to March, in which regular courses with twice the number of hours per week could be completed in half the period of nine weeks. Due to current legal changes in the country, the universities may offer a maximum of two semesters.
