The Pontifical University of Xaveriana ( Spanish Pontificia Universidad Javeriana , short: PUJ) is a Colombian university and one of the oldest in South America , which has existed without interruption since it was founded in 1623. Locations are Bogotá (headquarters) and Cali . 61 departments and 14 institutes with 181 study programs have been set up at 18 schools and faculties, with over 18,000 students enrolled in bachelor's degree programs and a good 4,000 students in postgraduate degree programs.

It is one of 28 universities on the continent that are run by the Jesuit organization "Friends of Jesus", after whose founder Francis Xavier the university is named.

history

The private university named after Franz Xavier and run by the Society of Jesus was founded in 1604 in Santafé de Bogotá . In 1623 it was recognized by the archbishopric. In 1767 the Jesuit college had to be closed. In 1930 she was under Pope Pius XI. reopened.

Grand Chancellor is the respective Superior General of the Jesuits, currently Arturo Sosa Abascal SJ, Vice-Grand Chancellor is the respective Provincial of the Jesuits in Colombia, currently Carlos Eduardo Correa Jaramillo SJ, and Rector is Jorge Humberto Peláez Piedrahita SJ.
