The University of Carthage ( Arabic جامعة قرطاج, DMG Ǧāmiʿat Qarṭāǧ , French Université de Carthage ) is a state university in Carthage, Tunisia .

history

The university was founded in 1988 under Zine Ben Ali , the then President of Tunisia. This makes it the third oldest university in the country, after the University of Zitouna , which was built in the eighth century, and the University of Tunis, founded in 1960 . During the revolution in Tunisia between 2010 and 2011, numerous student protests came from the university, after which it was temporarily closed.

Its campus is in modern Carthage, a suburb of the Tunisian capital Tunis and not far from the artists' village of Sidi Bou Said . With around 48,000 students and branch offices in Bizerte and Nabeul , it is the largest educational institution in the Tunis metropolitan area, which includes four other state universities. Teaching is in Arabic , French and sometimes also in English .
