The University of Tabriz or Tabriz University ( Persian دانشگاه تبریز Daneschgah-e Tabriz ) is a state university in the city of Tabriz, the capital of the East Azerbaijan Province . Before the Islamic Revolution in 1979 it was called the University of Azarabadegan . It is the second oldest university in Iran after the University of Tehran and the largest educational institute in northwestern Iran.
The university was founded on June 12, 1946 by Jafar Pischewari . The university started teaching in 1947 with the faculties of literature and medicine. The number of enrolled students is now around 24,000 and the number of academic staff is 800.
