The University Sports Club Halle (USV Halle) is a major sports club from Halle (Saale) with around 3000 members . The USV Halle continues the long-standing tradition of the HSG Wissenschaft Halle as its successor. The main task is to maintain a wide range of sports activities for students, employees and scientists of the Martin Luther University Halle and other sports enthusiasts from Halle and the surrounding area. There are 22 competitive and popular sports as well as attractive courses available for this. In the area of rehabilitation and disabled sports with more than 600 members, the USV Halle is of outstanding importance compared to other sports clubs.

history

The club was founded on April 1, 1949 as the university sports association “Geschwister-Scholl” and named HSG Wissenschaft Halle. There were 13 sections with 850 members. In 1952, the German Sports Committee of the GDR founded various sports associations, including the "SV Wissenschaft", which with 1000 members soon became one of the largest sports associations.

On October 1, 1954, in the course of the founding of the sports club, the 10 most powerful sections of the HSG Wissenschaft Halle with around 950 athletes were delegated to the SC Wissenschaft Halle. Later, the Sportclub Chemie Halle, or today's SV Halle , emerged from the SC Wissenschaft Halle . Around 800 members remained in the HSG Wissenschaft Halle. With the university reform in 1951, “compulsory sport” was introduced for students in their first three years of study. The HSG Wissenschaft was integrated into the organization. Thus, the rebuilding succeeded with 19 sections.

In the years 1958–1968 the HSG Wissenschaft was strengthened in close cooperation with the university sports teachers of the Martin Luther University Halle so that it could become one of the largest sports communities in the former Halle district with 1,500 members. The association played a particularly large role in the development of popular sport by founding “popular sports groups”.

Although the club's development in the following years was significantly influenced by insufficient material foundations for exercising or desolate sports facilities, a large number of initiatives and efforts made it possible to maintain and expand a range of sports that was possible within the framework of the structures of GDR sports. In 1985 the association had more than 5000 members.

After the turnaround, the club was redesigned in 1990 based on the model of the sports organization of the German Sports Association (DSB). As a result, on June 28, 1990 the club was renamed Universitätssportverein Halle e. V. (UPS Halle) registered.

One of the most demanding challenges in the development of the USV Halle was the goal of creating an own sports facility for the first time through the formation of club property. On April 3, 2009, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the club, the sports and health center (SGZ) of the USV Halle was inaugurated.
