The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a public university in Nigeria . It is located in the old cultural town of Ile-Ife in the state of Osun and is one of the older Nigerian universities .

The college was founded in 1962 as the University of Ife . After the death of the former Prime Minister of West Nigeria and first university president Obafemi Awolowo in 1987, it was named after him in his honor.

In 2005/06, a total of 31,846 students were enrolled (3,088 as postgraduate ). The university employed 1,066 teaching staff, including 265 professors, assistant professors and readers . A government commission criticized in 2012 that there were more senior administrators at the university than teaching staff.

There are 12 faculties and two colleges, the doctoral college and the college of medical sciences.

The campus covers an area of ​​approx. 49 km² and is also home to other institutions such as B. RECTAS and the Teaching Hospital. Three mountains, a reservoir and fish ponds and several villages are also on the site.
