The University of Jos (German University of Jos ) is a public university in the Nigerian city ​​of Jos , the capital of the state of Plateau . The official abbreviation is unijos .

The university offers various courses in medicine , law , pharmacy , natural sciences ( physics , chemistry , biology ), social sciences , architecture and study humanitatis / humanities .

history

Branch university

Today's Jos University was founded as a subsidiary university of Ibadan University in November 1971. The following January 1972 the first students were accepted (pre-university level). The first bachelor's program began in October 1973 .

independence

Two years later, the university was officially recognized as a separate university by the military government under General Murtala Mohammed . The university's first vice-rector was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluch.

In October 1976 the first courses of the independent university started and 575 students started their university studies. The course was in the four existing faculties of Education , Fine Arts and Social Sciences , Natural Sciences and Medicine . Postgraduate studies were added in 1977. In 1978 the Faculty of Fine Arts / Social Sciences was divided into two separate faculties and a Faculty of Law and Environmental Sciences was introduced.

In 2003, Jos University received a $ 2,000,000 grant to set up an in-house fundraising department.
