Unlike U - Trainwriting in Berlin is a documentary from 2011 that deals with Berlin's graffiti and street art culture. It was produced by Henrik Regel and Björn Birg.

action

The film examines the history of the scene from the beginning to the present, describing among other things the emotional world, the life and thinking of the graffiti artists. This is how, for example, everyday life as a sprayer in Friedrichstrasse when the Wall came down is described.

At the beginning a disclaimer is shown informing that the producers distance themselves from what is shown. Among other things, the film shows interviews with the sprayers and videos they have recorded themselves, showing them spraying trains and other objects.

Exemplary statements from the interviews include:

"It's such a cool feeling, a tin box goes in there, and then it's just full of the fat piece and when it's so beautifully colorful!"

"Berlin is the New York of Europe!"

Legal dispute with the Berlin transport company

In June 2012, the Berlin Regional Court upheld an injunction by the BVG and thus prohibited further distribution of the film. The ruling was based on the fact that the buildings, some of which were shown unapproved in the film, represented an infringement of property.

After the producers appealed, the Berlin Court of Appeal overturned the District Court's judgment on October 25, 2012. The appellate court justified this with the artistic freedom the filmmakers were entitled to, since the film would not force the criminal offenses, but only depict and explain them.
