Immortal Regiment ( Russian Бессмертный полк , Bessmertny polk ) is a social event in Russia and other countries on Victory Day . Its participants gather for a memorial march and carry the pictures of their family members who fought in the Great Patriotic War .

history

Even before the action called “Immortal Regiment” there were events with a similar character. Schoolchildren marched through Novosibirsk with pictures of veterans as early as 1965 . In its current form, the action began under the name “Parade of the Victors” in the West Siberian city of Tyumen in 2007. In the following years, other cities followed, including Kemerovo , Kazan and Novosibirsk, 2010 Moscow. The action took place under its current name in Tomsk in 2012. In 2013 it took place in 30 cities, in 2014 in 120 cities (including Ukraine and Kazakhstan ), and in 2015 in 500 cities.

In 2015, on the 70th anniversary of the Victory, the action took place in Russia , Austria , Azerbaijan , Belarus , Germany , Israel , Ireland , Kazakhstan , Kyrgyzstan , Mongolia , Norway , the USA , Ukraine and Estonia . In Moscow it was after the victory parade on the Red Square held and on the streets of the city. According to the police, 500,000 people attended, including President Vladimir Putin , who carried the portrait of his father, who was a soldier in World War II.

Organizational matters

The organization takes over the historical-patriotic public movement "Immortal Regiment". It is not necessary to register in advance to participate. The aim of the action is to honor a family member who was a war veteran, a partisan, an underground fighter, a worker on the home front, a concentration camp inmate or a victim of the Leningrad blockade . It is forbidden to display any commercial or political messages. Red flags and portraits of Stalin are also prohibited.
