Location of the mill on the Schunter, 1754

The lower mill , also known as the Princely Official Mill and Lower Paper Mill , was a watermill on a mill ditch of the Schunter near Räbke in the Helmstedt district . Remnants of the mill are no longer available today.

A previous plant was a sawmill owned by the Warberg rulers, which burned down around 1600. In 1694 the Warberg office built a paper mill on the site east of the village , which was converted into an oil mill in 1774 . The mill was located south of the Schunter shortly before its turn to the northeast and was supplied with water from the river via its own mill ditch .

The mill is shown on a map of Räbke and the surrounding area made as part of the Braunschweig General Land Survey of 1754. At the time, almost 570 people lived in the village's 84 residential buildings.

In 1786 the mill was demolished and the area was used for agriculture after the mill ditch was filled in. The mill ponds survived until the beginning of the 19th century. Today the former mill area is arable land.
